SU Community Mourns Recent Grad Killed In Crash

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University community is mourning the loss of one of their own.

A recent graduate, Janelle Marie Oni, 21, was reportedly hit and killed by an alleged drunk driver in College Park early Sunday morning.

"It is very difficult when it hits you that close, and I felt like Janelle was one of my children," says Vivian Shannon-Ramsey, TRiO project director at Salisbury University.

The program, which helps get students adjusted at SU and encourage them to stay, was one of the many groups that Janelle was involved in. Loved ones say she was also a member for the dance team, The UnTouchables, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and founder of "Pinky Promise," which aims to spread God's word to uplift women. She graduated as a double major in conflict analysis and dispute resolution and communication arts.

"Janelle was the kind of person that she wanted everyone to know their self-worth, so she was adamant about students, especially young women, being able to know that," says Shannon-Ramsey.

"She definitely taught us a lot, she taught me a lot about myself," says Joe Tyns, also a member of the TRiO project. "There's a lot of people that loved her a lot."

As they compound their grief, Janelle's family is struggling to pay for funeral costs. If you would like to help, there is a fundraising page online.
