Reno, NV.- Former UMES Bowling standout Maria Rodriguez outlasted two-time United States Bowling Congress Queens champion Kelly Kulick to win the 2014 title by a single pin at the National Bowling Stadium in Nevada.

Rodriguez, a 25-year-old right-hander, bowled a 190 missing the 2-4-5-8 combo in her final frame, but captured the title when the 37-year-old Kulick left the 10 pin on her first shot in the tenth frame.

"I couldn't believe it," said Rodriguez. "I wanted everything to be perfect, and it wasn't, but it turned out exactly how I hoped it would. I am so happy right now."

Rodriguez, who is of Columbian descent, became just the second foreign-born player since 1989 to win the Queens Championship. She took home the traditional Queens tiara and trophy, as well as a $20,000 purse presented by event sponsor, Storm.

The 2011 NTCA Collegiate Player of the Year and two-time National Champion cruised through match play to a 5-0 record, earning the top seed for the stepladder finals. "I knew I would be able to play my A-game, and that was important." said Rodriguez.

Fellow UMES Alumni T'Nia Falbo and Kristina Frahm also participated in the event. The Queens is open to all female USBC members and featured 178 players from 11 countries.
