Kannapolis, NC.- The Delmarva Shorebirds avoided a sweep with a 6-5 win in Kannapolis. Five runs in the fifth inning would prove to be the difference, including three bases loaded walks drawn by Delmarva.
Shorebirds starting pitcher Luis Gonzales ran into trouble in the third inning, allowing four runs, including a bases clearing double to Intimidators catcher Brett Austin. Gonzales would settle to retire the next nine batters he faced.
RBI singles by Jeff Kemp and Crede Simpson in the fifth inning cut Kannapolis' lead in half 4-2, when reliever Andrew Mitchell came on for Intimidators. Mitchell handed out consecutive walks to Conor Beirfeldt, Austin Wynns, and Gregory Lorenzo, giving Delmarva a 5-4 advantage.
The Birds would go on to tack on an insurance run in the seventh inning, pushing their lead to 6-4. Kannapolis would be a few feet away from tying the game. With a runner on and two outs, Danny Hayes belted one high off the wall, just inches from being a home run. Lucas Herbst played the ball perfectly off the wall and made a beautiful throw to second to hose Hayes and win the game.
Gonzalez improved to 3-0 for Delmarva as Jon Keller picked up his fourth save. The Shorebirds return home for the 4th of July at Perdue Stadium, first pitch scheduled at 6:35 p.m.
