Keeping Safe With At-Home Fireworks This Fourth Of July

Posted: Updated:

MARYLAND - The fourth of July just wouldn't be the same without friends, family and fireworks. But some like to bring the excitement into their own backyards.

But in Maryland, it's illegal to set off fireworks which lift off the ground. If you get caught with them, you could go to court to face a $250 fine for each illegal firework. Fire Marshall Deputy Kirby Travers says, as long as you play it safe, you should have no problems. He warns, "if you light a fuse on anything, and it doesn't go off, I would not go over to it for a long time."

Make sure to keep a safe distance after lighting them up, light them on a flat surface, and never play with them indoors. Children should always have adult supervision when around fireworks. Sparklers can reach up to 2,000 degrees! So make sure to watch young children and tell them to hold them at an arms distance away. Used sparklers should be placed in a bucket of water.

"If they follow the instructions on the packages, they'll never have a problem," says Deputy Travers.

Delaware does not allow anyone to have or ignite and kind of fireworks. Yes, even sparklers.

If you're more interested in seeing fireworks in public, from a safe distance and set off by a professional, you have a number of options.
