UPDATE: Shocking Discovery After Pursuit Crosses State Lines

Posted: Updated:

47 ABC - Scary moments Monday morning after a Delaware bank robbery leads to a pursuit across State lines, ending with the discovery of a four-year-old child along for the ride.

"I was stunned, we were all stunned to see this small child," says Sheriff Mike Lewis with the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office. "We knew we had our suspect vehicle but we certainly didn't know there was a child involved."

Laurel Police say it started around 10:30AM with an armed bank robbery at the Bank of Delmarva in Laurel. Chief Michael Wilson says 21-year-old Sarah Crosby approached a teller and showed a note saying she was armed and demanding money. The North Carolina woman reportedly fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Crosby's vehicle, a white Chevy Lumina, was reportedly spotted in Delmar, crossing into Maryland. At that point, Wicomico County Sheriff's deputies and Delmar Police started a pursuit. Sheriff Mike Lewis says the suspect struck two civilian cars during the chase, and a Delmar Police cruiser. Deputies were reportedly finally able to get ahead of her vehicle and laid down spike strips. The suspect reportedly ran over the strips, which effectively blew out her tires, and caused her to come to a stop in the median of the Route 13 Bypass near Johnson Road.

"It was not before the vehicle actually continued driving on the rims, and after the rubber actually separated from the wheel itself onto roadway," says Sheriff Lewis. "She told me she was just trying to get back to North Carolina, she did not have any money."

At the time of the stop, Deputies discovered her four-year-old son was inside the car. Luckily, no one was injured, but police say if they had known a child was in the back seat, it would have changed everything.

"That changes everything the way we approach the case, the way we conduct ourselves, the way we approach the vehicle," says Chief Wilson.

"We weigh all factors to include weather, road conditions and traffic conditions, and certainly we have to factor in the human factor, also the seriousness of the crime involved, and in this case we had a bank robbery," says Sheriff Lewis. "It shows you just how very difficult these cases can be and how dangerous they can be."

Sheriff Lewis says they found a large amount of cash they believe connects her to the robbery but no weapon was found on her. A complete search has not yet been done on the vehicle involved. Officials say it was transported back to Laurel for the investigation.

Crosby is awaiting extradition to Delaware to face robbery charges. The four-year-old has been turned over to the custody of Maryland Protective services.

"Certainly you don't want crimes to occur, but you definitely don't want to see crimes occur when people bring their children along," says Chief Wilson.
