DE Senate OK's $10M Bailout For Casinos

DELAWARE - A $10 million financial bailout is one step closer to coming to Delaware's three casinos.

The Senate approved a bill on Wednesday that calls for the state to help pay vendor costs for slot machines.

The legislation reportedly comes after businesses began struggling with increased competition from neighboring states like Maryland, and expressed concerns of having to share too much of their revenue with the state.

"The competitive dynamics of the casino industry have certainly changed over the last five years," says Governor Jack Markell (D-DE). "It's a revenue generator for the state as well, so I think it's important over time that these issues get addressed so they can stay competitive."

The bill originally had proposals to eliminate casinos' annual $3 million table-games fee, and reduce the states share of table game revenue, but those have been dropped.

The bill now heads to the House.
