Alaskan Earthquake 6/23

At 4:53 EST on June 23rd, 2014 there was an 8.0 earthquake near Attu Station, AK in the Aleutian Islands.  The epicenter is located at 51.8 north, 178.7 east, approximately 25 miles NW of Amchitka, AK and 195 miles W of Adak, AK, at a depth of 68 miles.  At the current time (8:30 EST) there is a Tsunami Advisory for the coastal area of Alaska from Nikolski to Attu.  An advisory for other coastal areas has been canceled.  For the areas included in the advisory; A tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to people in or very near the water is expected.  Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures, and may continue for many hours after the tsunami arrival.  Plus the first wave may not be the biggest.

The tsunami maximum forecast height, which is the highest expected water level above the tide, is expected to be less than one foot.  At 7:22 EST in Amchitka, AK a maximum observed tsunami wave height of 0.7 ft was recorded.  At 7:29 EST on St. Paul Island, AK a maximum observed tsunami wave height of 0.4 ft was recorded.   At 7:02 EST in Adak, AK a maximum observed tsunami wave height of 0.2 ft was recorded.

Good news for the west coast of the United States, the depth of the Earthquake was too deep to pose a threat to the US.  However some areas may experience small non-destructive sea level changes lasting for several hours.  The west coast of the US would have seen any disturbance within 6-8 hours of the earthquake.
