Tuesday The Dog Brings One U.S. Soldier His Freedom And Independence

SALISBURY, Md. - Luis Montalvan served his country for 17 years, and he returned with post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. He says it made him afraid to even leave his house. "It makes you stressed, makes you nervous, makes you anxious. I would have drank myself to the grave," he describes of living with PTSD.

His life was spiraling downwards, until he met Tuesday. A golden retriever and service dog, who helps him with everyday tasks. Part of the Tuesday's uniform is a black handle on the top of its back. "When I go down steps, I hold onto this handle. I don't get vertigo, or if I do, I don't fall anymore," Montalvan says.

But Tuesday helps with more than just physical tasks. Montalvan says spending time with Tuesday keeps him from slipping into traumatic thoughts of the past.

"Their minds, their spirits, don't vacillate from the future and to the past. [Tuesday's] almost like a grounding rod to the present," he says.

June is national post traumatic stress disorder awareness month. And in an effort to support other vets struggling with PTSD, and to help educate the public, Luis authored two books, The first is for adults titled "Until Tuesday" and chronicles his struggles with war, PTSD, and how Tuesday saved his life. The second is for children entitled "Tuesday Tucks Me In." It's a story from Tuesday's eyes, showing his experiences with Montalvon.

Books to honor Tuesday-A dog who gives this soldier what our soldiers have given us!

"Tuesday's given me back my freedom, my independence, my ability to live my life. He's given me back my life!" says Montalvan.
