UPDATE: Mikowski Sentenced To Two Years Behind Bars

Posted: Updated:

EASTON, Md. - Eighteen-year-old Matthew Mikowski, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the death of Samuel Cross, will spend two years behind bars.

Very few eyes stayed dry as more than 60 family and friends of both Sam Cross and Mikowski packed the Talbot County Circuit courtroom.

A judge sentenced Mikowski to 10 years on Friday, with eight of those suspended. He will serve his sentence in the Talbot County jail. Mikowski will also have to perform 500 hours of community service, alcohol and drug classes, and will be on supervised probation for five years. If he violates probation, he will have to serve the entire sentence.

In that time, Mikowski will have to educate and give advice to teens his age and younger on what drugs can do and the consequences faced for those actions.

Mikowski was also order to have no contact with the Cross family. He did not receive any additional time for his other offenses, and time served on house arrest does not count towards his sentencing.

The argument throughout Friday's proceedings was whether or not this was a drug case. The judge said that this was about what kids are doing behind their parents backs. He said six players were involved with the tragic circumstances and he wished he had the other teens in front of him to punish them as well.
