Ireton: Still Pursuing Grants For 12 Fire Positions

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - It's still unclear what will happen to 12 positions within the Salisbury Fire Department.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D) announced on Wednesday new Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response grants, better known as SAFER, for Maryland fire departments. That's how 12 Salisbury fire positions were originally formed in 2012. The grant is set to expire on October 18th.

Fire chief Rick Hoppes tells 47 ABC these newly announced funds have no effect on their current situation.

We reached out to the mayor's office asking if the positions will be let go. The office responded saying, "we are actively pursuing the SAFER [for fiscal year 2015]."
