Firm honored for community service innovation and outstanding results; 100% of employees volunteered in 2013
WASHINGTON, June 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Advisory Board Company's Community Impact program received a 2014 Corporate Engagement Award of Excellence on Monday from Points of Light, the world's largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. The award, given at the annual Conference on Volunteering and Service convened by Points of Light, recognizes outstanding employee volunteer programs that engage workers and improve communities.
"Through its Community Impact employee volunteer program, The Advisory Board Company is demonstrating the social impact that is possible when companies align their core business assets, their philanthropy, and their employee volunteerism to accelerate change in our communities," said Tracy Hoover, President at Points of Light.
Community Impact encourages and organizes the Advisory Board's staff to improve public health and student success through pro bono consulting, hands-on projects, and not-for-profit board service. Employees share best practice expertise with health care and education not-for-profit organizations, empowering community organizations to drive greater social change.
In 2013, 100% of Advisory Board employees participated in community service, a rare milestone for a company of its size. The Advisory Board's 2,700 employees contributed more than 32,000 volunteer hours to more than 500 community organizations in 2013, creating $1.7 million in monetized impact.
Staff have also reported professional benefits from participation. More than 67% of Advisory Board employees developed new skills through pro bono consulting projects.
To encourage participation, the Advisory Board offers each employee up to 120 hours per year of paid time off to volunteer. The average company allows 29 hours per year, according to the Points of Light Corporate Institute.
"Community Impact enables employees to be a force for good in our communities and is a great way to harness the vast talent and energy at the Advisory Board," said Scott Schirmeier, Executive Vice President at The Advisory Board Company. "We learn so much from the pro bono organizations we serve. Their passion and commitment to community transformation is inspiring and highly relevant to the work we are doing to help health care and higher education institutions solve their most pressing problems."
In addition to the Points of Light Award, The Advisory Board Company has received a number of other awards for workplace policies and innovation. In 2013, Modern Healthcare rated The Advisory Board Company No. 1 among Best Places to Work in Healthcare for large companies. The Austin American Statesman named the firm among its Top Workplaces for the fourth year in a row.
