Air Quality Alert - 47 ABC - Delmarva's Choice

Air Quality Alert

The majority of the peninsula is under an air quality alert today. More specifically, we are under a code orange air quality alert. This kind of alert is issued by the Department of the Environment and there are different indices for reporting on the quality of the air, called the Air Quality Index. The Air Quality Index expresses how clean or polluted the air is by focusing on ground level ozone and airborne particles; two of the bigger threats when it comes to human health.

The Air Quality Index is a range of values from 0-500. Lower values correspond to high quality of air and higher values correspond to low air qualities. When values are below 100, air quality is generally satisfactory for everyone. Values above 100 become unhealthy for sensitive groups such as children and elderly, and values above 150 signify unhealthy air quality conditions for everyone.

The values also come with a color to signify the quality of the air conditions. Values of 0-50 are symbolized with green and values 51-100 are symbolized with yellow. Values of 101-150 are symbolized with orange and values of 151-200 are symbolized with red. The very unhealthy and hazardous values are set at 201-300 and 301-500, and symbolized with purple and maroon.

As we are under a code orange air quality alert today, this means conditions outside are unhealthy for children and older adults with respiratory ailments. While this singles out the young and those with respiratory conditions, everyone can be affected by the heat accompanying the air quality alert. Everyone should take caution and stay hydrated with plenty of fluids and avoid the peak heating hours of 10 AM – 2 PM.
