DE Drivers May Face Bigger Penalties For Handheld Phones

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - Drivers who get caught behind the wheel with a handheld cell phone or any electronic device in Delaware, could get costlier.

A bill that would increase the first-time penalty from $50  to $75 passed the House, and now heads to the Senate. The measure also requires that repeat offenders face no more than $200, which is the current law, but no less than $100.

Police say citations for drivers were reportedly up 48 percent last year, which is roughly 20,000 tickets.
