Delaware Awarded $11M To Protect Against Storms

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Federal officials say Delaware has been awarded $11 million in grants for projects to protect communities against damage from future storms.

The U.S. Department of the Interior's Hurricane Sandy Coastal Resilience Grant Program announced the grants to 11 states in the eastern U.S. on Monday.

Delaware was awarded $4.5 million to restore the beach and dune system along the central Delaware Bay shore. The state also received $4.5 million to assess wetlands and develop restoration strategies for the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

A third grant will fund the design and construction of restoration strategies for Delaware Bay's wetlands and beaches.

Delaware is providing matching funds for the projects.
