High School Seniors Head To SU For Maryland Girls State

SALISBURY, Md. - High school seniors are gathering at Salisbury University this week for the 168th Annual Maryland Girls State.

The program allows the students to learn how to become future leaders by making up fake cities and counties to represent, and debate actual house and senate bills.

The goal is for the group to learn leadership, and gain a better understand of how government operates, which is something they say some students are not taught enough in high school.

"Between running in different elections and learning to public speak, I really gained a lot of confidence and I think the other girls do as well," says Savannah Steinly.

Two girls will be selected at the end of the week to attend "Girls Nation" in Washington, D.C. Previous participants include former Texas Governor Ann Richards and news commentator Jane Pauley.
