Mixed Feelings From Locals On Upcoming Firefly Music Festival

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del - Tens of thousands of visitors throughout the country will be riding in to Dover, Delaware this weekend for the four day Firefly Music Festival. For some, it's the city's biggest draw. Three Firefly volunteers say that, other than passing through Dover on their way to Ocean City, Maryland, they have never been to the city.

Raceway liquor, which is located right next to the stadium, says they love the crowds! At last year's festival, they doubled their normal customer count. And they are expected the same great turn out again this weekend.

"I can see more people coming by Friday and Saturday next week, especially morning to noon time They never let you sit down!" owner Dipak Patel says.

But not everyone is happy as Patel. Shuckers Pier 13 restaurant is right next door, and they say they're usually busy. But when firefly came to town last year, "It was very dead.," server April says. "You never know how the traffics going to be and the unexpectedness. Some of the people just don't want to fight it and will wait til another week."

Congested roads are a common concern for locals.

"I'm just thinking about the traffic," said Dover local, Ariel, when she thought about going to work this weekend. "I'm just going to have to get up early or figure something out."

"We live East of 13, so we'll stay back as far away from the track as possible," said Dover local Justin Grimminger.

Deldot says they're trying to reduce the amount of traffic they saw last year. Thursday through Sunday, they're closing Leipsic Road to be used only by festival-goers. They predict most of the congestion will come Thursday morning, as people are just arriving. Locals should attempt to use back roads, and avoid Route 1 North and I-95 whenever possible through Sunday.
