Caronia's Road To Recovery From Being Hit in the Face With 95mph Fastball

Posted: Updated:

Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds shortstop Anthony Caronia was struck in the face with a 95 mph fastball from the Greensboro Grasshoppers pitcher Domingo German on April 11th. The road to recovery and ultimately back on the field has been long, but after nearly two month, Caronia made his return on June 5th.

Immediately after being hit, Caronia dropped to his knees and saw how much he was bleeding. He didn't feel as much pain as he though most people would suspect, likely because of the adrenaline. He was then taken to the hospital where they put a brace to hold his teeth in place, many of which were loose. For the next two weeks, the only food he could eat had to be a liquid because he couldn't chew. His face was so swollen that he couldn't see out of his right eye except for when looking directly up.

He then began rehabbing and working his body back into playing shape. Once he was ready to return, he said one of the hardest things was stepping back into the batting box. After he saw the first pitch, he settled down and was better from there. Now he is back into the rotation and once again contributing to the Shorebirds as they close out the first half of the season.
