Punkin' Chunkin' May Have Found Its New Home!

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. - It looks like pumpkins will once again soar, as this year's Punkin' Chunkin' is expected to move to the Dover International Speedway. The World Championship Punkin' Chunkin' Association will meet Sunday to work out final details, before its sent to last year's team captains for a vote.

The gourd hurling event has been at Wheatley Farms, inc in Sussex County for the past five years. But the owner decided to call it quits last year, after being sued by an injured volunteer in 2011. So the search has been on to find a new venue that can hold it!

Promotions Director Frank Shade explained, that the event needs a lot of land. "Our machines at the longest shot are looking at about a mile long, so we need a piece of property that's a mile long at a minimum. We've looked at several counties in Maryland, we've looked all through the state of Delaware… and as far away at York, Pennsylvania," he says.

Frank says finding a new spot has already put them a month and a half behind schedule. And even if Dover Speedway is a go this year , it's not a guaranteed location for future years.

"We don't have that venue right now,so we have to do the next best thing, which is to go where we can hold the event, and continue to have the Punkin' Chunkin' and go from there," Frank says.

Even though Punkin' Chunkin' officials had wanted to keep the event in Sussex County, we're told they're excited it's at least staying in Delaware. After the Sunday meeting, a week later the captains of last year's punkin' chunkin' teams will vote to give final approval on this location choice.
