On The Lookout: WBI Warns Of Contractor Scams

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO CO., Md - Detectives with the Wicomico Bureau of Investigation tell 47 ABC they get a number of calls from residents who say they've been overbilled by contractors.

Most of the victims we're told are elderly. Since April, WBI has worked close to 10 cases. The average per year is upwards of 25 cases of contractor fraud.

"You hire a contractor for a $2,000 roof and the next thing you know it's up to $5,000 and they are doing a bunch of jobs that doesn't need to be done," said Sgt. David Owens.  "Then someone who knows some sense about the job comes around and says 'those things didn't need to be done, you just got had.'"

Investigators say when hiring a contractor, make sure you do your homework. Check out that person's reputation within the community and don't be afraid to ask for references to make sure the contractor is legitimate.
