Dover HS Community Mourns Recent Grad Killed In Crash

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. – Three victims of a deadly crash over the weekend in Marydel are recent Dover High School graduates.

"They just graduated on Wednesday night, a couple nights before, I just hugged them at graduation," says Dr. Evelyn Edney, principal of Dover High School.

Delaware State Police say at approximately 10:12 PM on Saturday, June 7th, a 1999 Ford Escort, operated by Estanislao Lopez-Berduo, 27, of Marydel was traveling westbound on Halltown Road (SR8) west of Enss Road, in Marydel. For unknown reasons, Lopez-Berduo's vehicle reportedly crossed over into the eastbound lanes, into the path of an eastbound 2000 Pontiac Sunfire being operated by Zachary Rogers, 18, of Marydel, resulting in a head-on collision.

Police say Lopez-Berduo, the operator and sole occupant of the Ford Escort sustained multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigation has reportedly determined that alcohol is suspected as a factor on the part of Lopez-Berduo.

Police say Rogers, the operator of the Pontiac Sunfire was properly restrained in the vehicle, sustained multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. School officials say he had plans for college, and had dreams of becoming a barber.

"The kid had his whole life ahead of him, and three days after graduation, to have it taken away, that's tragic," says Robert Santangelo, a family friend of Rogers'.

"I worked with Zach over the past couple of years on what some of his goals are and staying out of trouble," says Terisha Collins, community and school staff member at Dover High School. "He just really took off this year, and just blossomed into a really wonderful young man. He definitely had a bright future."

Two female passengers in the Sunfire, Avianna Walker-Lane, 17 and Mikeshia Stewart, 19 both of Dover, were transported by Delaware State Police Aviation Helicopter to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center. School officials say Walker-Lane was released on Monday, and Stewart was updated to "good" condition.

"We were able to sit and visit with Mikeshia for a little while," says Dr. Edney. "She's banged up but she's doing OK."

The group reportedly had plans to go to Six Flags Great Adventure the day after the crash.

"He didn't deserve this, his family didn't either," says Jamie Aarons, a friend of Rogers'.

"This tragedy, it upset a senior class, a school, and even the community of Dover, and it's something I need everybody to think about when they're drinking and decide to get behind the wheel," says Tina Pinkett, a business teacher at Dover High School.

Rogers' grandparents are reportedly in the process of making funeral arrangements, but school officials say they plan to have a big Dover High school showing in memory of Rogers, and in support of the two girls, with everyone dressed in blue and white.

"We're deeply saddened but were going to work together as a family and as a community to get through it," says Collins.
