Wallops Research Park Hope To Provide Economic Boost For Accomack

Posted: Updated:

WALLOPS ISLAND, VA - Details on a new facility, which state and local leaders hope will bring big business to the Eastern Shore.

"What we're doing here is preparing for the future," says Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe.

It could be the start of a new economic engine driving Accomack County.  Monday, Wallops broke ground on an $8 million research park project, with the hope that major engineering firms would decide to set up shop on the shore.

"If we wanted to open our doors to make our unique capabilities more available to the private sector, to grow commercial space, they needed a space that they could grow, out in the space where businesses like to work," Caroline Massey, Assistant Director of Management Operations for Wallops.

The 200 acre project will lay the infrastructure for the park, installing roads, plumbing, and high speed Internet for future businesses.

"This is a major job creator," says Governor McAuliffe, "we have to do our responsibility to make sure we're matching the skills that are needed for the job through the education.

In addition to new business at the site, officials hope the park will bring new business to a struggling Accomack County.

Funding for the $8 million Wallops Research Park came, equally, from Virginia's Transportation Partnership Opportunity Fund and the Accomack County Board Of Supervisors.

Construction is expected to be completed by this December, though Wallops is still in the process of squaring away companies to build and lease space on the site.
