Ocean City College Takeover Doesn't Take Off, Stays Calm - 47 ABC - Delmarva's Choice

Ocean City College Takeover Doesn't Take Off, Stays Calm

Posted: Updated:

Four words "College Takeover Beach Week" seemed to strike fear in Ocean City residents and business owners this weekend, but now that the weekend is over, a sigh of relief.

"There were no serious criminal incidents this weekend," says Ocean City Police Spokesperson, Lindsay O'Neal.

Police beefed up security throughout the town after hearing how the event surprised Virginia Beach last year, with tens of thousands of visitors, violence, bad behavior and three separate shootings.

Artist, Brittany Smith, says she decided to pack up her boardwalk spray painting business early, Saturday night, telling 47 ABC, "we left around 8 o'clock before the sun went down. Just to be safe, better safe than sorry."

With the College Takeover finished without ever really taking off, police in Ocean City say they're already moving on to the next thing: curbing underage drinking, as thousands of high school grads hit the beach for Senior Week.

"People are going to do it anyway...it is what it is you know," says Kyle Schroeder, a recent high school graduate from Baltimore, in Ocean City for the weekend.

Police data shows last year, more than 400 citations were given for underage drinking in Ocean City in the month of June, which is when most of the graduates come to town.  That number, almost 20-times more than the other summer months.  This summer, like every other, police say they're cracking down, with a no tolerance policy.

Ocean City's Play It Safe program continues this year, offering alcohol-free events, free of charge, for the nearly 10-thousand underage kids expected to hit the town during the month of June.
