Wicomico Co. Schools Consolidates Magnet Program

WICOMICO CO., Md. - Changes are on the way for Wicomico County's Magnet Program.

Schools officials say the classes will no longer be offered at two schools, instead they're consolidating the program at North Salisbury Elementary and not Pemberton Elementary. The program was designed for high performing learners back in the 1980s, but because of class space and funding, school district officials say the change had to happen.

"With Pemberton having the Magnet Program in the building, that lowers the percentage of children who qualify for Free and Reduced Meals to less than the county average," said superintendent Dr. John Fredericksen. "[This would mean that] we are not allowed to use Title I funds to provide support services for those kids."

Fredericksen says that no teachers are at risk of losing their jobs.

This school year, 230 students are enrolled in the program with about two-thirds of the kids taking their classes at North Salisbury.
