Providing Health And Wellness A Challenge For MD Hospitals

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - PRMC officials say they average $3.5 million a month in charity care, which is the care given to people who are uninsured, but in need of services.

With more people signing up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act, there is the hope that number will go down, but they say it's still too early in the game to predict what will happen.

In the meantime, the hospital faces the challenge of keeping emergency room visits down, while still giving patients the services they need.

"Now hospitals are challenged with providing health and wellness to the community in addition to the sick care," says Chris Hall, vice president of strategy and business development at PRMC. "We have all these different avenues outside the hospital so people can access them for care, so they're not using the hospital for unnecessary care."

Hall says they have appointed a new position to solely focus on partnerships across the county that can provide services to people before they would have to go to the hospital.
