Local Experts Offer Tips On Hurricane Preparedness

Posted: Updated:

MARYLAND - It's the second day of hurricane season, and now is the time to get ready.

"Have a plan," said Steve Marshall, Director of Emergency Services for Somerset County. "If you have to evacuate, where would you go?"

Although he says the county is more prepared than it was for Super Storm Sandy, Marshall urges people to make a list of what you need to take with you, including legal documents, food supplies and medication.

"The top priority is to be prepared," Marshall added.

And before a storm hits, you should understand how you're home's protected.

"You should review your homeowner's policy with your agent at least once a year," said State Farm agent Tom Prunty. "Because in most cases you will have a wind deductible and a hurricane duration deductible, and you need to know the difference."

Prunty adds that flood insurance is never included in a home owner's policy, so homeowners should contact a local insurance agent if you're interested in getting coverage.
