Sending A Bit Of Home To Troops Overseas

Posted: Updated:

SHARPTOWN, Md. - You may hear the call for donations, or requests for help, to send care packages to deployed troops. It's a request that carries a lot of weight with service men and women on the receiving end.

"You can't get a whole lot of stuff," said Matt Jones "So the stuff you do get packed from people from your home town, it means a lot."

As a member of the National Guard, Jones has been on both sides of the box. He received a package from Operation We Care while deployed last fall, and he was lending a helping hand on Sunday morning at the organization's Spring Packing Party.

"I'm just grateful that I can pack something for someone that's over there, so the can have the same feeling I felt," Jones said.

Patricia Johnson was also packing supplies for troops Sunday, but one box held a special meaning.  It was for her son, Paul "Buck" Chambers.

"He was on a ship, and he hadn't been receiving many of his packages," Johnson said. "But then, all at once, all of the 34 packages came to his entire group… And some of the guys had not gotten anything from any of their family members, so it was extra special for them to get that."

Each one of the 499 boxes was filled with what soldiers want and need, and sent with a lot of love. And, it's received with a lot of appreciation.

"I think it's the little cards and stuff that the kids do," Jones said, as he explained what made each box so special. "Some certain things in the care packages, you know like old bay, you know, you can't get that across there. And there's  certain shampoo and conditioner and body wash that you can't get over there, so it just reminds you of being back home."

Familiar gifts, snacks and notes, sent to help hold them over until they return.

"It's very heartfelt to know that people back home still care about you, and are thinking about you while you're gone." Jones said, as he headed off to pack another box.

The packages will be sent to members of the military around the world, including Afghanistan, Libya and even those stationed on ships at sea.
