Senior Citizen Driving Co-Op Proposed In Sussex County

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX CO., Del. - Sussex County, a popular place for folks to retire, but as many of those retirees get older and can no longer drive to where they want or need to go, what do they do?

One woman says she's got a plan: a senior citizen driving co-op.

Retired principal Nancy Feichtl got the idea a couple of months ago after a personal revelation.

"It dawned on me that my son lives in California and my daughter lives in Annapolis, so when I get old, what am I going to do?" says Feichtl, and she's not the only one likely thinking that way.

According to a recent study by University of Delaware's Institute for Public Policy, the number of Sussex County residents 65 and older is expected to double to about 80,000 by 2030..."and in that cohort will be 12 thousand that are at 85 and above," chimes in Feichtl.

Now, she's trying to bring iTNAmerica, a national senior citizen driving co-op to Sussex County.  The company already operates in more than a dozen states.

Riders, who pay an annual membership fee, contact a dispatcher, and a driver is sent out for a pick up, with seniors paying one dollar per mile.

Last month, Feichtl asked Sussex County Council for $35,000 to help kick the co-op into gear.  Last we spoke to the county, no decision had been made, but even if the council buys in, the co-op would need about $80000 *more* dollars to actually launch.

Still, in the face some pretty daunting odds, Feichtl says she's optimistic, believing "we can have a really great impact."
