UPDATE: Crash Near Bridgeville Leaves One Dead

Posted: Updated:

BRIDGEVILLE, Del. - Delaware State Police say a crash near Bridgeville early this morning left one person dead and one person injured.

According to reports, the crash occurred at 2:57 AM. An initial investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit reportedly indicates Garrett Cordrey, 21, of Newark, was driving a 2006 Ford F-250 south in the northbound lanes of Sussex Highway (U.S. 13), north of Camp Road. His vehicle reportedly collided with a northbound 2006 Honda CRV, which was traveling in the left northbound lane of Sussex Highway.

Police say after the collision, the F-250 left the roadway and the CRV rotated 180 degrees, coming to rest facing south in the right northbound lane. It was then reportedly struck by a northbound 1996 Freightliner tractor trailer, which overturned, spilling its load of woodchips. While this occurred, one other vehicle, a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire, reportedly sustained damage by striking debris in the roadway.

Police say Cordrey and the driver of the Crossfire, Kyle Thompson, 28, of Salisbury, Maryland, were not injured. The driver of the tractor trailer, Howard West, 62, of Seaford, was reportedly transported by ambulance to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Police say the driver of the CRV, 58-year-old Nancy Nelson of Denton, Maryland woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. All drivers involved in this collision were reportedly properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Police say the Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into this crash, and no charges have been filed. Lane closures on Sussex Highway remain as the scene is cleared.
