Maryland GOP Gubernatorial Candidates Focus On Economy In Debate

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - The tone was set for the Maryland Republican Gubernatorial debate, with Anne Arundel County Delegate Ron George's opening statement "this is about the economy."

George, Harford County Executive David Craig, businessman and former Ehrlich administration official Larry Hogan, and Charles County business exec Charles Lollar spent the hour outlining ways to strengthen Maryland's business community

"You need to have a diverse economy so that if one of your businesses is having trouble internationally, or nationally, that you have someone else to have a good foundation," said David Craig.

Another hot topic, keep money in the pockets of Marylanders

Charles Loller proposed "passing a real taxpayers bill of rights that's going to tie the growth of government directly with the cost of living and CPI (Consumer Price Index), we're also going to completely eliminate the personal income tax over a five year period."

Eliminating the personal income tax, a popular topic Saturday, with Ron George promising "as soon as I get in, January 2015, I have emergency legislation that says the taxes that you are paying now, you will see come April, you will get 10 percent more back on your income tax."

"If you were to, say, eliminate the income tax as a couple of people talked about, it blows an eight and a half billion dollar hole in our budget that has to be filled somehow," said Larry Hogan.

For Hogan, the key is to control spending before rolling back taxes.

All four candidates spent much of the debate criticizing the so-called career politicians in Annapolis, claiming a lack of business experience at the top has crushed Maryland, and each of the four think they've got what it takes to build it back up again.

The full debate will be available on our web site...47abc.com.

The primary is set for June 24th in Maryland.
