7-on-7 Tournament at Stephen Decatur High School

Posted: Updated:

Berlin, MD -- Football is back, for at least a day. Over at Stephen Decatur High School, eight football teams took the field for a 7-on-7 tournament hosted by the Baltimore Ravens and Under Armour.

"The last three years we have been coming down here doing the 7-on-7 tournament with Under Armour. The kids get shirts, socks, and gloves. They kind of get outfitted up and they get to play out here and get ready for the upcoming season," said Baltimore Ravens manager of Marketing and Youth Football Matthew Little.

It's the off-season for high school football and they use this time for weight training and cardio. But when the opportunity arises to participate in tournaments, like this one, they see it as a way to continue to strength their team bond.

"It prepares us. Chemistry is getting better. We are learning to play with each other and learning what people can do," said Cambridge South Dorchester football player Jakii Yuman.

"Sort of gives us team unity before the season. We get "clicking" early then we can have it right during the season," said James M. Bennett football player Malik Shockley.

This tournament is an invite only and players have to try out in order to make the team.

"Normally all skill players come out and try out for this. Mainly defensive backs, safeties... This is like getting us ready for the off-season," said Cambridge South Dorchester football player Dishawn Elliot.

It doesn't matter who is out on the field, just knowing that the season is that much closer is something that everyone is looking forward to.

"You know, this is our fourth year down here. We really appreciate the Ravens, Under Armour and Stephen Decatur Coach Knox putting it on. It kind of starts the season for our kids.. Football is right around the corner so it kicks it off and we are really excited about it."

James M. Bennett defeated Cambridge South Dorchester 5-4.
