Laurel Softball Holds Off Caravel, Repeats As State Champions

Posted: Updated:

Woodside, DE.- As Caravel Academy (16-5) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh down 3-0, Laurel junior pitcher Regan Green never wavered.

The Mississippi State commit had a perfect game going into the seventh inning, but lost it on an infield single. Green, who pitched a perfect game in last year's state championship game as a sophomore, finished with twelve strikeouts in seven complete innings of work, allowing only two hits.

After two scoreless innings, Laurel got on the board in the third with RBI singles by Sara Jo Whaley and Regan Green. A bloop single by Green in the bottom of the fifth would help her cause, plating Gabrielle Culver, pushing the lead to 3-0. That would be all the insurance Laurel, needed as Green preceded to mow down batter after batter.

In the top of the seventh however, Caravel began to make things interesting. After allowing back to back singles, Green stood with the bases loaded, and go ahead run at the plate for Caravel. Green reared back and preceded to get the final two outs, striking out the last batter of the game for her twelfth of the game.

This is Laurel's second straight DIAA softball championship. Congratulations to the Bulldogs.
