Are You A Road Bully?

Posted: Updated:

47 ABC - Thousands will be hitting the highways in the coming months. If you have a road trip planned, a warning about the cars around you.

Are you a Road Bully?

"It's a combination of speeding, abrupt lane changing, cutting people off, following too closely, which some people call tailgating," Lieutenant Tim Robinson of the Wicomico Co. Sheriff's Office said.

"You'll see somebody just cussing or giving the finger,"

In the state of Maryland, if you're caught committing at least three of those violations at the same time, that's a $370 citation and 5 points on your driving record.

"Mostly when people don't abide by the passing on the left, I kind of tailgate and get angry," Harrison Budd of Salisbury, Md. said.

And beach season apparently means more road rage.

"We do see a spike in aggressive driving, specifically on Route 50 east bound in the summer

So we went for a ride-along with Deputy Chip Oakley of the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office to check out that route. Sure enough, we spotted one.

"The reason I stopped you, is you were only about a car length behind that vehicle. So that's traveling too closely," Deputy Oakley told the driver.

This time, they got off with a warning, but your concern shouldn't be the ticket. It should be safety for you and those around you.

If you find yourself in an aggressive driving confrontation, you don't want to do anything to make the aggressor angry. Don't make any eye contact and don't challenge them by speeding up. Just try to get out of the way and obey the rules of the road.

Keep in mind, an aggressive driving citation is a separate, additional charge. That means you could get a speeding ticket, a ticket for tailgating, and an aggressive driving ticket all at the same time. In Maryland, 8 points on your license could lead to a suspension.
