Gavin's Big Surprise! - 47 ABC - Delmarva's Choice

Gavin's Big Surprise!

Posted: Updated:

DELMAR, DE - A three-year-old boy, just diagnosed with a rare disease, got a pretty special surprise Tuesday morning.

Thanks to our friends Whiskey and Randy, from Froggy 99.9, Gavin is going to meet his "girlfriend," country star Cassadee Pope this weekend. 47 ABC also threw in a $100 gas card to help get him there.

In March, the curious three-year-old was diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis, also known as EOE. It's a chronic and very rare disease that causes white blood cells to build up in his esophagus. The disease not only makes eating painful, Gavin also is severely allergic to most foods and things outdoors.

"It hurts his esophagus, where if it hurt us, we would be able to tell on the outside.  Think it hurts him on the inside to where it makes him itch.  They compared the pain to a heart attack," says Gavin's mother, Rebecca Bender. "We're hoping for a cure . . . hopefully . . . one day."

Because of severe allergies related to the EOE, Gavin's family has had to strip the carpet and furniture from their home. To help pay for that, as well as the monthly trips to A.I. Dupont in Wilmington, they've set up a GoFundMe page. If you're interested in learning more about Gavin's illness and how you can help, visit MAKING CHANGES FOR GAVIN.
