Military Service Honored In Ocean Pines

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN PINES, Md. - For many, Memorial Day means beaches and barbeques. But the significance of the day is much, much more.

"I escaped from prison one time and got captured again," explained Carmel Whetzel. At 90 years old, his attempt to escape a German POW camp during World War II remains vivid.

"There were two guys that escaped the day before we did, and they brought them back and shot them in the head in front of the rest of us. So, were lucky."

Stories like this one pepper our American history, and Monday in Ocean Pines, hundreds came out to pay tribute through speeches and song.

"I guess it means so much to me because it means so much to my dad," said Nancy McIntee, whose father, Frank Wright was also a prisoner of war during the second World War.

"He even has a stone down here, as a memorial for ever," McIntee said, showing off the stone.

The day also included a tribute to those who are MIA, female veterans, and the mothers of those lost in service.

It's an important day for those who survived and are here among us.

"It's good to be back, in the United States where you're not worried about war," said Benjamin Lewis, who served in 1945.

And for who didn't make it home, there were tears and gratitude for the price many paid for the freedom we all now enjoy.
