WICOMICO CO., Md. - A Salisbury man has been convicted after he financially exploited the elderly.

On Wednesday, 42-year-old Richard Matthews was convicted by a Wicomico County jury of 3 counts of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult and 3 counts of misdemeanor theft. The charges were brought against Matthews in May 2013, after he offered three different residents of Deer Harbor automobile detailing or other tasks in exchange for money, up front.

Matthews now faces a maximum of nine years behind bars for his crimes. Sentencing has been deferred at this time, pending a pre-sentencing investigation. Matthews is being held at the Wicomico County Detention Center without bond until his sentencing date.

Matthews apparently had a moderate criminal record before these incidents.
