On The Lookout: Anonymous Tip Could Break Open Case

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO CO., Md. - For police, not every case is cut and dry.

In Maryland, if a person is at-large, Crime Solvers is the anonymous tip line. But those aren't the only tips that help police crack open the case.

A crime scene is clearing up and a suspect is not in custody and nowhere to be found.

But back at the station, a tip comes in that could break the case open.

"At the end of the day what we really want the truth about a case," said Sgt. David Owens.

It's the life of an investigation says Owens. For WBI, most of their leads come from people looking to stay out of sight, making them a crucial piece to figuring out the puzzle.

"You probably have [information] that can help us and we can find other ways to get from A to Z without putting [a person in the middle of the case]," said Owens.

But can anonymous tippers stay on the sidelines during the trial if an arrest is made?

Owens says most of the time, yes. But each case is different.

"They are insistent upon remaining anonymous," said Owens. "We take the information then we try to pursue the information but sometimes we can't. You have to make decisions based on, 'am I going to push him,  force him?  Or am I going to be true to my word and as police officers?'

"If you don't have your word, you don't have your integrity," said Owens.

If you have any tips for recent crime and you'd like to remain anonymous, give Crime Solvers a call at 410-548-1776.
