Moore, Oklahoma was hit very hard during tornado season last year. One of the strongest tornadoes hit the town on May 20, 2013, leaving a path of total destruction. Yesterday was the one year anniversary.
The tornado touched down southwest of Moore at approximately 2:56pm and carved out a 17 mile path of destruction. The tornado eventually lifted 40 minutes later at 3:36pm just east of Moore. The tornado moved through a very high populated area within Moore, which was the worst case scenario.
The tornado was rated an EF5, the strongest category possible on the Enhanced Fujita tornado scale. Winds were clocked over 200 mph and did some of the most damage near Plaza Towers Elementary where several school children lost their lives. A total of 24 people were killed, including 7 children, and $2 billion in estimated property damage.
