Cambridge SD Baseball's Late Rally Falls Short vs. Smithsburg

Posted: Updated:

Frederick, MD - The Cambridge South Dorchester baseball team saw their season come to an end Tuesday in the state semifinals with a 4-3 loss to Smithsburg.

The Vikings would threaten in the 1st with the bases loaded, but a strike out and a fielders choice would stop a run from scoring. The Leopards would take advantage of some timely hitting in the bottom of the frame to break the 0-0 tie. First with the bases loaded, Junior Harding would walk in the games first run. That was followed by a single as Smithsburg grabbed a 2-0 lead.

Harding would settle from there though, and stop any sort of Leopards offense for the next several innings. In the top of the second, the Vikings would get on the board when Koby Schreiber would knock an RBI single to score Brian Lindsay.

From there, both pitchers would find a groove, as the game saw a ton of strike outs. In the 5th, the Vikings would begin to look a little rattled as a wild pitch would advance a runner. That was followed by a misplay at third, and a wild pitch to first. That all allowed for another Leopard to score, pushing the lead to 3-1.

The dramatics came in the 6th for the Vikings though. Following an out, Nathaniel Lowe would knock a single to get aboard. He would then steal second, which seemed to fluster Smithsburg pitcher. Lindsay would then earn a walk. in a gutsy call, the Vikings pull off the double steal to advance the runners to second and third with one out. Following a strike out, Koby Schreiber would continue his monster game with a colossal 2 RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.

The Leopards though would respond in the bottom of the frame to grab a 4-3 lead. Cambridge would fight to their last out, and get a runner as far as third base, but couldn't drive him home. The defending champs fall in a close one, 4-3.
