App Tracks Local Water Quality For Swimmers

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - If you want to check water quality before you head to the beaches this summer, Assateague COASTKEEPER and Assateague Costal Trust When you head out to local beaches this summer are putting real-time reports at the palm of your hand.

The "Swim Guide" app and tells you what to expect buy listing the latest bacteria levels for local Maryland Waterways. It pulls data reported by both Worcester County and Assateague COASTKEEPER, and gives a red or green flag to indicate which areas have higher levels.

"visitors and residents, instead of having to go to many different web sites to get that information, they've got it right here on their phone," said Kathy Phillips of Assateague COASTKEEPER. "We provide it real easy and they can find everything at a glance."

The app is hosted by Water Keeper Alliance, and connects with other monitored waterways nationwide.

"If you're going to one of the rivers, or let's say, New Jersey or Long Island, your phone will pull up all of the Swim Guide beaches wherever you are," Phillips explained.

And if you see a red flag, Officials say that shouldn't necessarily stop a day in the water. They suggest both you and any equipment you used should be rinsed off after getting out.

The "Swim Guide" isn't the only app released by Assateague COASTKEEPER today: "Water Reporter" is also available. It allows people to report trash, debris and other potential hazards at waterways.

Both are available for iPhone, and the "Swim Guide" is available on Android phones as well.
