Coast Guard Kicks Off Safe Boating Week

OCEAN CITY, Md. - The U.S. Coast Guard asks boaters to be cautious this year.

National Safe Boating Week kicked off Saturday afternoon with dozens of safety checks over at the West Ocean City boat ramp.

Volunteers looked for life jackets, paperwork and even flares in case of an emergency.

"You could be out [on the waters and if your engine dies] on you in the middle of the day, it's hard to get people to notice you if you're in trouble if you light a flare someone could response to it," said Robert Sheehan of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

According to the Coast Guard, about 80 percent of all reported boat fatalities occur when the operator has not received proper safety training.
