Governor O'Malley Vetoes Bill Delaying Somerset Wind Turbines

Posted: Updated:

SOMERSET CO., Md. - Governor Martin O'Malley vetoed a bill today that would have essentially killed a wind turbine project in Somerset County.

House Bill 1168 reportedly required an approximately 15-month study to look at how the height of the turbines would affect the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Governor O'Malley reportedly emphasized his commitment to the naval air station because of its critical importance to Maryland.

In addition, the Governor reportedly noted that the Great Bay Wind Project helps alleviates the threat to Pax River caused by rising sea levels. According to reports, the recent release of the Third National Climate Assessment highlights the costs that climate change is already imposing on Maryland and underscores the importance of human action and innovation to address the issue. Sitting on the Eastern Seaboard, officials say Maryland is particularly vulnerable, as is Pax River, to the effects of climate change.

The project is expected to bring $44 million dollars to the county.
