Debate Continues Over Salisbury Fire Dpt. Funding

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury city leaders announced on Monday that they are assembling a Fire Service Mediation Team to handle negotiations with the county over Salisbury Fire Department funding.

Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton says the county only covers about 25 percent of the fire department spending, even though they take on about 60 percent of the county's workload.

"What we have to do is renegotiate where the lines are throughout the county and the county has to find a way to pay the city for the percentage of the county that we cover."

Mayor Ireton says their goal is not to take away funding from the other fire departments, but county officials say they've had a long-standing agreement of treating all departments equal.

"We understand that some do more than others but if we didn't do it that way a lot of the smaller ones wouldn't be able to exist," says Rick Pollitt, Wicomico County Executive. "The economy as it is right now, there really is no new money, especially from county tax dollars to be paid to be applied to any one particular company."

Pollitt says he is waiting on recommendations from the Center of Conflict Resolution at Salisbury University before making a mediation team of their own, or making any changes.
