Deadly Stretch Of Route 113 To Expand To 4 Lanes

BERLIN, Md. - Known as one of the deadliest stretches of roads on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Route 113 will soon expand to four lanes in another portion.

"The fatalities are three times the state average," said secretary Joe Smith of the State Highway Administration. "We just can't tolerate that, people shouldn't be at that kind of risk."

SHA announced on Monday $49 million toward widening nearly four miles of the highway from Five Mile Branch Road to Massey Branch Road. This is on top of another $10 million for the roadways from the O'Malley Administration last summer.

But it's not the only change coming to 113.

State officials are dedicating the entire 14-mile stretch that has been widened over the years to former Del. Bennett Bozman, who was a major advocate for the project.

"The grand daughters, probably, this will be the last time they'll have something public to honor, to see that and they'll be able to see this sign any time," said Elizabeth Bozman, widow of Bozman. "He worked hard for it he really did."

Construction is set to begin early next year with a completion date as early as winter 2017.
