Wicomico Co. Schools Excusing Absences On Hot Days

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO CO., Md. - With warmer temperatures forecasted, and school still in session, a local school board is allowing students excused absences on hot days.

Wicomico County Pubic Schools, says parents of students who attend schools that are not full air conditioned, can choose to keep their child home, on days that the forecasted temperature is above 85 degrees. Included schools are Bennett Middle, East Salisbury Elementary, West Salisbury Elementary, and areas of Pittsville Elementary and Middle.

Once the student returns to school, they must bring a note from a parent or guardian, stating that the heat was the reason for not attending, and the absence will be excused. Work from the missed days will be allowed to be made up.

Officials say that every effort will be made to keep the students who do attend on hot days, comfortable. Students are allowed to have water bottles in the classroom, and are urged to wear dress code appropriate attrite, that will keep them cooler. Schools reportedly have fans in both classrooms and hallways, to keep air moving, and lights may be shut off to keep it more comfortable.
