How Weather Is Affecting Your Coffee

People all around the world follow a routine of a cup of coffee, or 3, in the morning. The cup of coffee you're drinking may become even more expensive. Many of the top coffee producing countries are in a drought that is forecast to become worse in the coming months.

The driving factor in the drought to come is El Niño. The basis of El Niño is the warmer than normal ocean temperature in the central Pacific. During this weather event, there is an increase in dry weather in Central America. The coffee crop in these regions is already threatened due to a fungus, called coffee rust, which chokes the crop.

The drought that is forecasted will further hinder the production of the coffee crop. On the upside, El Niño will bring rain to other drought stricken parts of the world, such as the southwestern United States.
