Most Bang For Your Buck On Mother's Day Flowers

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - It's not chocolate, or candy that rules on Mothers Day, but flowers.

According to the National Retail Federation, Americans will dish out $162.94 on average this for mom.  More than 66 percent will spend their green on flowers, but if you want good quality, this isn't necessarily the best time to buy.

"There are so many flowers being cut for that one time that some of them are being cut a little early, some are being cut a little late," says James Gray, owner of City Flowers in Salisbury.

If you are buying blooms, especially last minute, here are a few tips.

Buy local.  As more people move further away from mom, personal delivery isn't always an option, like for college student James who says "I might have to ship it."

Order from a nearby florist (at least near to mom) instead of online.  Add-ons and processing fees can quickly jack up the price.  Not to mention, "they're actually sending it to people like me and other local florists," says Gray.

With just a few hours left until Mothers Day, finding a florist might be hard, so, many shoppers will likely flock to grocery stores to pick up a bouquet.  Unfortunately, Gray says, "they're not going to be the best ones."

Grocery store flowers typically come in at the beginning of the week, and are held in refrigerators, slowly put out for display as needed.

If you're stuck in that position, ask how old they are, and be on the lookout for yellowing leaves.

One key to long lasting flowers, buy them a little young, Gray says "you want them a little tighter, so she can enjoy them opening up."

Another tip on how to keep your flowers fresh for as long as possible: use clean water.

If it starts to get a little dirty, change it out, and keep the stems trimmed.

Flowers should last you about a week on average.
