DE Fire Companies & EMS Could See Funding Help

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - Fire companies across Delaware may have a chance at getting help some funding help for their Emergency Medical Services.

According to Delaware Volunteer Firefighter's Association officials, there are four pieces of legislation that are looking at ways to find money. One bill proposes a $10 charge to all motor vehicle violations, and another proposes increasing the portion of the health insurance tax that goes to volunteer fire companies. Legislators also proposed asking county governments to contribute by paying a percentage of the EMS costs, but that measure has reportedly been tabled for now.

The pieces of legislation reportedly come after EMS Task Force reportedly found that fire companies across Delaware were forced to pay more than $8 million from other revenues to cover EMS expenses.

Warren Jones, executive manager with the association, says there is a lot at stake if at least one piece of legislation does not pass.

"Some of them are going to have to look at cutting back," says Warren. "The companies who need to grow, who need to hire more folks to put on more staff, to buy more ambulances because of call volumes going up and up, can't do that."

Warren says legislators have been extremely supportive, and he is confident that they will be able to find a solution.
