Strawberry Crop Later Than Usual This Spring

Posted: Updated:

HEBRON, Md. - Heads up for Strawberry lovers! The crop is reportedly coming to the market a little late this year.

Virginia agriculture officials reportedly say cooler weather at many farms delayed this year's crop by one to three weeks, but those conditions may help boost the size and sugar levels of the fruit, making this year's extra sweet and juicy.

According to farmers at Oakley's Farmers Market, the slight delay may pay off.

"We covered them up during the winter, but this spring we put them on and they were about a week late, and Lord willing we'll have them go about a week later in the season" says Tom Oakley. "They're pretty berries this year."

Oakley says most of their crops this year were about a week late. He says lots of sunshine and just a little rain will make for the perfect summer.
