Professor: Boko Haram Has Been Doing Even Worse Things

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Boko Haram, the Nigerian militant Islamist group got the attention of millions as Twitter lit up after the April 14th kidnapping of more than 200 school girls.

But what motivates the group?

Delaware State University professor of International Politics Dr. Akwasi Osei says it's due to education.

"They hate Western education and they will do anything to wipe it out and the latest thing they did was to hurt the sensibilities," said Osei.

According to Dr. Osei, the terrorism in northern Nigeria didn't just pop up last month. Boko Haram was founded in 2002 and has reportedly been involved in terrorism as early as 2009.

"They've been doing this, even worse things, killing people, burning them in their homes," said Osei.

Martin Jones traveled to Lagos, Nigeria in March to film a documentary about child soldiers. Upon his arrival, he was advised not to travel north.

"I didn't realize how intense it was until now," said Jones.

47 ABC caught up with Charles Wratto, the subject of his film, who lives in Nigeria.

"I feel deeply sorry for the family of the girls being kidnapped by the Boko Haram," said Wratto. "On the other hand, I think it's a shame."

"We spoke at five, maybe six schools and any of those students that we talked to and took pictures of could have been any number of people that were kidnapped," said Jones.

The Nigerian government has reportedly agreed to accept US aid to find these girls. The groundswell of support on Twitter uses #BringBackOurGirls.
