Man Charged With Vehicular Assault After Crash In Lewes

LEWES, Del. - A Lewes man has been charged with a fourth DUI offense, and vehicular assault, after a Monday night crash, that sent a man to the hospital.

Delaware State Police say around 9:15 PM 56-year-old David Esch, was driving a 1998 Lincoln Town Car, Eastbound on John J. Williams Highway, coming up to Dorman Road. At the same time, Police say 47-year-old Raymond Trolan, of Millsboro, was driving a 1995 BMW 525 Westbound, approaching the same intersection.

According to the report, Esch unexpectedly pulled into the Westbound lane, in front of the BMW, causing the two vehicles to collide head-on. Both Esch, and Trolan were taken to Beebe Medical Center by EMS. Esch was treated for non-life threatening injuries, and released, while Trolan was admitted for a severe injury to his leg.

Esch was charged with 4th offense driving under the influence of alcohol, vehicular assault 1st, driving while suspended and revoked, no proof insurance, and various other traffic related offenses.

Police say Esch had previous DUI convictions in 1996, 2001, and 2012. He is being held at Sussex Correctional Institution on $7,300 bond. Traffic in the area of the crash was impacted for approximately one hour during the investigation.
